Hey juha, I lost a pup just as you described. when i found it , it was lying against the whelping box, under the "bumper". I think sometimes a pup gets under the protective bumper and mom lies against it and not knowing, traps the puppy, and while the pup isnt crushed, I think it suffocates. I cut 1 x 6's and screwed them on top of the 2 x 4's to give the pups an extra 2" safety bumper, hopefully it will prevent anymore suffocations. hope that makes sense, may not be what happened to your pup at all, but you wouldnt believe, the litter it happened to was a litter of 3 pups, the biggest was the one that was trapped and i believe suffocated.

thanx everybody. sometimes when I feel bad - everything around me here at home tells me what is this life for

Mike - you might be right. who knows but thanx for the good tip. I'm gonna modify the "bumbers" for the next litter. or actually I thought it could be easier to build up a new box for Johnsons and use this particular one only for the english bulldog pups which will touch the ground again in a few months or so
